Food Shopping in London on a Budget

Food Shopping in London on a Budget

I recently had someone ask me how I budgeted while I was in London, and the thing that I budgeted most was food. A girl’s gotta eat, after all. Especially with all of the walking you do in London. “Place is nothing… My giant goes with me wherever I go.”

Travelling is a fool’s paradise. We owe to our first journeys the discovery that place is nothing. At home I dream that at Naples, at Rome, I can be intoxicated with beauty and lose my sadness. I pack my trunk, embrace my friends, embark on the sea, and at last wake up in Naples, and there beside me in the stern Fact, the sad self, unrelenting, identical, that I fled from. I seek the Vatican, and the palaces. I affect to be intoxicated with sights and suggestions, but I am not intoxicated. My giant goes with me wherever I go.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, an excerpt from “Self-Reliance”

I admire what Emerson’s saying here. 100%. A lot of people would like to escape their sadness, and they think that going abroad will somehow cure them of their emotional woes.  This isn’t a good reason to go abroad. Like Emerson points out, and like I witnessed on my program in London, place is nothing and your giant will go with you wherever you go.
